Keith Herzik:There Are Still Lofty Dreams, Meager Desires, and Still Silliness

Silliness prevails in the prolific screenprints by Chicago-based artist Keith Herzik. Curated by Chicago-based artists Paul Nudd and Chris Kerr the exhibition aims to reveal the underrepresented talent of the local artist Herzik, whose odd sense of humor and color rival the strange sensibilities of the Hairy Who artists introduced by the Hyde Park Art Center in the 1960s.

The curators note that Herzik “ignores and willfully defies most of the recognizable tenants of screen printing,” as he pushes the medium and its materials to their limit. “Although he has made a substantial amount of these low-brow pieces of punk-rock Americana, I also feel that he has transcended the ‘poster-guy’ label pretty well. In fact, he’s pretty much abandoned this mode of making. Most of Keith’s peers have gone on to lucrative careers and have their own sustainable screen printing businesses, but Keith has held on tight to his artistic vision and has remained commercially nonviable, quite underground, and way outside of the screen printing AND fine art mainstreams.”

Early in his career Herzik studied with cartoonist Peter Saul at the University of Texas at Austin and since has created numerous punk-rock posters and is a prolific publisher of handmade artist books, zines, and other publications. His brazen approach to screen printing breaks all of the traditional rules of the medium, while still being well-crafted. Herzik’s day glow prints maintain an immediate approach to drawing; wavey, messy lines and jarring color schemes provide the unique, informal qualities that have become a hallmark of Herzik’s work.

Along with the screen printed work by Herzik in Gallery 2, Nudd and Kerr have curated a companion show in Gallery 5 at the Art Center, Blaque Lyte including related artwork by thirty artists created to glow under the black light bulb.

then you probably saw this happen with a nice lecture from Keith G Herzik

if you suffered memory loss between then and now you can use these pictures to remind you

of what you saw

over the last few years I have been discovering ways to use symmetry to make a single

piece of film for printing that can be printed in one color (and then after the screen is flipped) printed in a second color to fill in the missing shapes... I use split fountain blends to make it even trippier

Spider Man and Frog Man versus the White Rabbit and her gang of thugs

(when I was like four years old, one of the first drawings I can ever remember was a little comic book I made

of a Spider Man comic... probably looked kind of like this)

this is a mezzotinted plate made with spray paint and sharpie marker to block out the acid etch,

so the drawn lines come out white (no ink) when wiped and printed...I hand colored it with water color gouache...

pretty happy with the way it came out

the blue ink was super thick and tacky

I thought it might come out too messy but it worked all right

(could be a little more transparent, oh well)

I added "miracle gel" to the red ink and it seemed too creamy during the

wiping

all considered it came out cool

first time I ever used two plates!

hell, time to move on to different etchings and techniques

I am taking an copper plate etching class (Intaglio, amigo) taught by Alex Chitty (she rules!) at Spudnik Press here in Chicago (Spudnik rules too!) tuesday and thursday nights

...been about fifteen years since I have done this process, totally excited to be doin it again!

tuesday prior I started with two 5"by 8" pieces of flattened roofing copper

cleaned em, beveled the edges, put hard ground on one (asphaltum?)

and went to town with some needle tools; then thursday while the hardground plate was in the acid bath I put soft ground on the other (sticky asphaltum?) and drew with a pencil and litho crayon on a piece of paper on top of the plate, the pressure from the marks on the paper lifted the soft ground off, in about the space of three hours I had two fully etched and cleaned plates and was able to ink and proof them on BFK paper, whoa, I still was able to go out later and drink beer!
